What is Neural Racer?

Neural Racer is a free interactive educational web application where you draw custom race tracks and train AI cars to navigate them using neural networks and genetic algorithms. It provides hands-on machine learning education without requiring any coding knowledge.

How does the AI car learn to drive?

The AI uses 5 ray-cast sensors cast at angles (-60 degrees, -30 degrees, 0 degrees, 30 degrees, 60 degrees) to detect walls. It processes sensor data through a neural network to decide steering direction and speed. In Evolution mode, genetic algorithms select the best-performing cars and breed them using crossover and mutation to create progressively smarter drivers over generations.

Is Neural Racer good for learning machine learning and neural networks?

Yes! Neural Racer provides visual, hands-on experience with neural networks, sensor simulation, genetic algorithms, and fitness-based selection. It includes 6 interactive tutorials explaining real-world applications like Tesla Autopilot, Waymo self-driving cars, and DeepMind's AI systems. No coding experience is needed.

Do I need coding experience to use Neural Racer?

No coding experience is required. Neural Racer is designed for beginners and provides an intuitive visual interface. You draw tracks by clicking, adjust neural weights with sliders, and watch the AI learn in real-time. Interactive tutorials explain each concept in plain language.

What is genetic algorithm evolution in Neural Racer?

Genetic algorithm evolution is a Premium feature that spawns 20 AI cars simultaneously with random neural weights. Cars compete based on fitness (distance traveled and time alive). The best performers are selected through natural selection, and their weights are combined through crossover and mutation to create the next generation of smarter drivers.

What are neural weights and how do they affect the AI car?

Neural weights are adjustable parameters that control the AI car's behavior: Speed (1-10) determines how fast the car moves, Steering Sensitivity (0.01-0.2) controls how sharply it turns, and Vision Range (50-250px) sets how far the sensors can detect walls. Tuning these weights is like adjusting the brain of the AI to find optimal driving performance.

What are the weather effects in Neural Racer?

Neural Racer Premium includes four weather conditions that challenge the AI: Clear (normal conditions), Rain (adds plus or minus 20% random noise to sensor readings), Fog (reduces vision range by 50%), and Night (reduces vision range by 30%). These simulate real-world challenges that autonomous vehicles face.

How is Neural Racer different from other AI simulators?

Neural Racer uniquely combines track drawing, real-time neural network visualization, genetic algorithm evolution, and interactive tutorials in a browser-based game. Unlike text-based learning, you see the AI make decisions in real-time, watch sensor data flow through neural network nodes, and evolve populations of cars through natural selection - all without installing any software or writing code.

Can I drive the car manually in Neural Racer?

Yes! Neural Racer includes a Manual Control Mode where you drive the car using WASD or Arrow keys. This lets you experience the track firsthand and compare your driving against the AI. A ghost car feature replays your best run as a transparent overlay so you can try to beat your own record.

What does Premium Neural Racer include?

Premium Neural Racer ($9.99 one-time lifetime access) unlocks: Genetic Algorithm Evolution with 20 simultaneous AI cars, Weather Effects (rain, fog, night), Dynamic Obstacles, Advanced Analytics Dashboard with crash heatmaps and performance trends, and 6 Interactive AI Tutorials covering neural networks, sensors, decision-making, evolution, and real-world applications.
